Family Nature Adventures at Northlake Nature Center

Family Nature Adventures are hands-on environmental education programs designed for curious kids and the grown-ups who explore with them.

Each program takes place at Northlake Nature Center and uses the natural world around us as the classroom. Depending on the topic, families may investigate wetlands, search for wildlife signs, examine pond water, explore decomposers, observe adaptations, journal in nature, or take part in other hands-on science activities.

Some programs may also include a live animal ambassador when it connects naturally to what we are learning.

These are not drop-off classes. Adults are encouraged to participate, explore, ask questions, and make discoveries right alongside their children.

Upcoming Adventures

October 24th - Creepy Critters: Not So Scary After All!

October is filled with spiders, snakes, bats, bugs, and other creatures that tend to get labeled as creepy...but what if they're actually pretty amazing?

In this hands-on program, we'll investigate some of nature's most misunderstood animals and discover the important jobs they do in our ecosystems. We'll explore predators, decomposers, food webs, adaptations, and why even the critters that make us say “NOPE!” deserve a little respect.

Participants may meet a few of Nature on the Geaux's live animal ambassadors along the way and then head outside to search for some of Northlake's own creepy critters and the clues they leave behind.

$12 per child
$10 each additional sibling
Adults participate free

A minimum of 6 registered children is required for each program to run.

Who Can Attend?

Family Nature Adventures are designed for families with children who enjoy nature, science, wildlife, and exploring outdoors.

What Should We Bring?

Programs take place outdoors.

Please come prepared for the weather and wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes that can handle a little dirt, mud, or adventure.

Water, bug spray, and sunscreen are always a good idea.
